Twitter finally bids adieu to API v1, pulls plug on TweetDeck

Now it's official: users of TweetDeck apps for iOS, Android and Adobe AIR will have to look for an alternative app.

On Wednesday (Philippine time), Twitter's Taylor Singletary confirmed the micro-blogging service has pulled the plug on its API v1 and moving on to API v1.1.

"Today, we are retiring API v1 and fully transitioning to API v1.1. Given the array of blackout tests, blog posts, Tweets and other updates, this should (hopefully) not be a surprise," Singletary said in a blog post (https://dev.twitter.com/blog/api-v1-is-retired).

He also thanked developers for their "cooperation over the last several months."

Singletary also cited results of blackout tests showing "the vast majority of applications have transitioned to API v1.1."

"If you still have not updated your app and you want people to be able to continue using it, it’s not too late!" he said.

Tech site The Next Web noted Twitter extended the life of API v1 by one month, after originally announcing it would shut down v1 on May 7.

But now that API v1 has been officially retired, it said TweetDeck apps for iOS, Android and Adobe AIR are virtually dead, along with SilverBird and DestroyTwitter.

But for now, the report added TweetDeck for Mac and PC will continue to work and follow feature updates on the app's Web and Chrome versions.

The Next Web also noted many popular apps had heeded Twitter's earlier warnings and moved to API v1.1, though some independent developers simply gave up due to restrictions on smaller apps.

In 2012, Twitter began imposing restrictions on developers and their apps, controlling its API more tightly.

On the other hand, The Next Web noted Twitter appeared to have some problems of its own, with its own search engine "not working due to API issues." — TJD, GMA News
