Girls Generation's YouTube Music Awards win draws racist commentary
By MICHAEL LOGARTA
YouTube hosted its first music awards on November 1, Sunday. While controversial rapper, Eminen, won Artist of the Year, South Korean pop group Girls’ Generation won YTMA Video of the Year, according to Kotaku, PopDust, and the Sanctuary Tumblr.
With over 74 million views and more than 400,000 likes, their music video, “I Got a Boy” beat the offerings of international artists such as Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, One Direction, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and Miley Cyrus.
One would think this would be a cause for celebration, but no.
'Ching chang chong'
“The question is why is girls generation in America if they cant speak a word of English lolllooololl,” said one irate individual from a losing fandom.
“CHING CHONGS INVADING MY MENTIONS SOMEONE WHY DIDN’T THEY DIE WHEN AMERICA NUKED THEM,” said another.
“WTF HOW DID JUSTIN LOSE OVER SOME JAPANESE CHICK NO ONE KNOWS,” said a disheartened Bieber fan. Another, who had also succumbed to Beiber fever, even threatened self-harm for the heart-wrenching loss. “WE FAILED JUSTIN AND NOW I WANNA KILL MYSF BC DISAPPOINTMENT BYE.”
But Beliebers weren’t the only disconsolate ones. One Katy Perry fan tweeted, “my mention full with asian ching chang chong.”
At least one angry individual proved his inability to count: “This is a joke right? This lil Asian girl?”
While another proved his ability to over-count: “omg it was like 30 asian girls in that music video that just won but only one is coming up to accept the award lolwtf.”
Loved the world over
Girls’ Generation is extremely famous in Asia, selling millions of albums and singles as well as filling stadiums to capacity. They are also well-known outside Asia, having performed in both Australia and the USA, and appeared on talk shows such as The Late Show With David Letterman.
Apparently, not everyone has heard of them, though.
When the nine-strong group was declared winner at the YTMA, the reaction from the crowd was muted, and tweets like “HOW DID THOSE IRRELEVANT ASIAN GIRLS WIN?” continue to soar in numbers. — TJD, GMA News
