Filipina blogger’s ‘Don't date Mexicans’ post draws mixed reactions

An article written by a Filipina travel blogger on dating Mexican men came under Internet fire recently for allegedly promoting stereotypes.

“10 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Date Mexican Men” was written by Trisha Velarmino and originally posted on listicle site ThoughtCatalog.com in November of 2014.

In it, Velarmino stated that she dated two Mexicans herself. Her reasons include “You will get addicted to the guacamole dips they make every day” to “You will hate how they look at you with all the love in their eyes.”

Here are the 10 reasons listed in the original post:

1. You will get addicted to those guacamole dips they make every day
2. You will long for their warm hugs and then some
3. Because they can cook very well
4. You will hate how they look at you will all the love in their eyes
5. You’ll find it hard to laugh at other men’s jokes
6. Because they are brutally honest
7. You will always remember them whenever you see a bottle of hot sauce
8. You will never forget their Spanish phrases. Even if you don’t speak Spanish
9. Because they take selfies with you
10. You will love them forever. I mean forever

However, the article gained traction after Gawker.com got wind of it and on Tuesday posted a few choice entries. The original ThoughtCatalog.com post has since been flagged and taken down.

The article was reposted in full by another blogger, who is a friend of Velarmino's. It has received very mixed reactions, ranging from “stereotypical and racist” to “I had a good laugh at this with my Mexican husband” to “Where are all these men you talk about?” to “This is very true!”

Velarmino describes herself as “a road scholar who loves learning languages, burgers, cats, football, hot sauce and coffee.” She blogs for P.S. I'm On My Way.
