National Pabebe Wave Day: A new record-breaking tsunami of tweets


Last Saturday, the nation swooned yet again over the kilig antics of the split-screen love-affair between Yaya Dub Maine Mendoza and Alden Richards, more commonly known as AlDub. This momentous television moment glued almost everyone to their TV screens. 
 
Along with Alden doing his akyat-ligaw—a do-over of their botched date the other week—it was also the National Pabebe Day. Expectations for last Saturday’s episode were at a whole new high. The pairing that pulled in millions of social media savvy fans did not just break their own Twitter record, but doubled it with more than 24 million public mentions of #AldubEBforLove for September 26. Gathering from the fact that this daytime TV segment achieved this record breaking feat, let’s take a look at what other things the social media listening tool Radian6 tells us about this phenomenon.
 
Breaking Twitter records yet again 
 
As soon as the official hashtag was announced at 12 midnight, the Aldub Nation went to work. It didn’t matter if it was the wee hours of the morning here in the Philippines; smashing the record was the first order of the day. By 1 AM, more than 1.5 million tweets had come in. 
 
 
Determined to break the 12M record, #AldubNation from all-over the world relentlessly tweeted, averaging more than a million tweets per hour, ultimately shattering the previous week’s record even before Eat Bulaga started. The highest peak (2.5M) was recorded before 2pm as anticipation of the day’s episode reached fever pitch with Alden singing his own version of the song God Gave Me You as ‘harana’ to YayaDub and then finally making his way to Lola Nidora’s mansion. 
 
 


In comparison, the competitor’s hashtag also peaked at around the same time, although it failed to match the sheer power of the Aldub Nation. According to Radian6, #AldubEBforLove garnered 4 times more than the total mentions with 80.3% versus that of the competitor with 19.7% share only. 
 

 
While mentions about the Kalye Serye focused primarily on Twitter with 99% share, it cannot be denied that conversations about this trend also bleed out to other channels including Facebook, blogs, and video sharing sites. Although mostly in private and cannot be crawled by social listening tools, Facebook is the next largest channel for #Aldub conversations. You’d be one of the few exceptions if you haven’t seen a lively discussion about the couple in your Facebook newsfeed.

 
It’s an #AldubWorld
 
It wasn’t just the Philippine social media sphere that was buzzing about Aldub last Saturday. Filipinos all-over the world all also took-part in this record shattering feat with mentions coming from United States, China, Singapore, and UAE, countries where large population of Filipinos are.

Tweets about staying up late or waking up earlier than usual just to be able to watch the show live and show support were also all over Twitterverse.  This Twitter support movement for Aldub evidently shows how much fan cooperation helped usher this loveteam into where it is today.
 
 
 
 
Beyond the Official Hashtag
 
Official hashtag aside, another 1.7 million mentions about Aldub were recorded pushing the total mentions to as high as 26 million. Likewise, another trending hashtag #AldubAndProud emerged late night of September 26 amassing another 500 thousand mentions.

 
 
It should not come as a surprise should the fandom break another record or quite possibly transcend international fame in the following weeks. Wherever this sensation goes, there’s one thing left to do for now, sit back, relax and enjoy. The anticipation for the next AlDub adventure is all too exciting, and what their loyal and ever persevering fan base will do to break social media will be just as riveting.
