AlDub breaks the Internet with record 25.6 million tweets

Over 25 million tweets. That's how many it took for AlDub to rocket to the top of the Twitter charts, besting even some of the US' most tweeted events for the year.

Last Saturday, 26 September, a total of 25,652,800 Tweets used the hashtag #ALDubEBforLOVE from 12:00 AM to 11:00 PM. The number of Tweets peaked from 1:00-2:00 PM.

It’s hard not to notice that AlDub-related hashtags are almost always among the top trending hashtags on Twitter, but thanks to Twitter users ALDUB STATISTICS (@ineffable888) and Jerick Carlo Almeda (@pagkalaagan), we can take a closer look at the hard numbers that illustrate just how popular the KalyeSerye pairing is.

AlDub versus the world

AlDub-related Tweets have consistently outnumbered Tweets related to Showtime, the corresponding primetime show of GMA’s rival network.

In this case, however, "popular" is a gross understatement. The love team has  managed to beat even the more tweet-savvy US at its own Twitter game.

In terms of the absolute number of Twitter users, the US leads the world by a very large margin, according to Sysomos research.

Despite this, AlDub outdid the Super Bowl XLIX and the Video Music Awards—both of which were the US' most-tweeted events in the past year, with 25.1 million and 21.4 million tweets, respectively.

Needless to say, #ALDubEBforLOVE also easily outdid the performance of the previous “big three” AlDub hashtags for the month of September 2015. #ALDubEBforLOVE easily outranked #ALDUBMostAwaitedDate (12,125,300 Tweets on 19 September) and #ALDUBTheAbduction (6,409,500 on 12 September).

A close-up look at sentiments and demographics

According to Almeda, he and ALDUB STATISTICS gather their data from Twitter’s Streaming API which provides real-time data about Tweets filtered by keyword or hashtag.

Using that information, they were able to generate insights such as the top 10 languages used in AlDub Tweets and the gender distribution among users who Tweeted about AlDub. They also found that while most of the Tweets understandably came from the Philippines, a large bulk also came from the United States and Indonesia.

Sentiment analysis, meanwhile, looks at how people feel based on the words they use in their Tweet. Almeda said that they used a third-party tool to conduct their sentiment analysis. The tool’s accuracy rate is around 70-80% and uses mostly English base keywords.
