AlDub, elections top 2016’s ‘most influential moments’ on Twitter in PHL

With only a few weeks before the year ends, social networking site Twitter on Tuesday launched #ThisHappened in the Philippines in 2016, marking its highlights for the year.

"Twitter is where Filipinos go to see what's happening everywhere in the world right now. From breaking news and entertainment to sports and politics — from big events to everyday interests with all the live commentary that makes Twitter special," the online platform said in a statement.

For 2016, the "phenomenal love team" AlDub was recorded as one of the most influential moments on Twitter with over 200 related hashtags.

To recall, the couple's Valentine's Day campaign #AlDubIsLove got over 4.1 million tweets, while the #AlDub1stAnniversary was celebrated with 6.6 million tweets along with a customized Twitter emoji.

The love team's first movie #AlDubImagineYouAndMe accumulated 7.8 million tweets in its first week and when the couple tied the knot in Eat Bulaga's "Kalyeserye," this reaped in over 8 million tweets under the #AlDubWedding hashtag.

According to Twitter, the top moment this year was the first-ever #TwitterElection in the Philippines in May with over 35 million elections-related Tweets, as conversations flowed with reactions to the actions and words of President Rodrigo R. Duterte.

Some four million election-related tweets were recorded on the election day, 330,000 tweets on the inauguration day, and 280,000 tweets during the State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Rounding up the top three is the 2016 Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards which came second, where Maine Mendoza was crowned as the Favorite Pinoy Personality for the year.

Other top influential moments include the BTS K-Pop Group global contest, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the homecoming of Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach in January, the #PacBradley fight in April, the Marcos Burial, typhoon Lawin, and On the Wings Of Love. — Jon Viktor D.
