Nurse, who helped homeless woman give birth, is a leukemia survivor

Nurse Lorrainne Pingol did not hesitate to help a homeless woman give birth on the street when the barangay tanods of Makati City flagged her on the way to work.

Her act went viral on social media, but for her, she is merely paying it forward after being on the receiving end of other people's kindness.

In Bernadette Reyes' report for "24 Oras," Pingol shared that she was diagnosed with leukemia in 2013.

"Nung time na na-diagnose ako, maraming tumulong sa akin," she said. "Kaya that's one reason na rin kung bakit bukas-palad din akong tumutulong pagka may nangangailangan as long as kaya ko."

Pingol is immunocompromised due to her bout with leukemia, so she chose to let go of a hospital career. She now works as a nurse at a health insurance company.

It has been a while since she last attended to a birth, so she admitted to feeling nervous about helping the woman. She shook it off, aware of the consequences of a birth gone wrong.

"Inalala ako lang 'yung natutunan ko nung college tsaka 'yung naranasan ko sa delivery room sa ospital way back years ago," she said.

She cut and clamped the umbilical cord of the baby, and then made sure the woman delivered the placenta. This was crucial—the placenta may cause bleeding if it was not expelled from the body.

"Puwedeng ikamatay ng mother 'yun. Kaya kailangan mailabas mo yung inunan and make sure na walang maiiwan sa loob," she said. "Sinadya siguro panginoon 'yun na mapadaan ako nung oras na 'yun para tumulong doon sa ale."

Pingol said she was also glad to become an inspiration for others amid the current health crisis.

"At least na-uplift ko rin 'yung morale ng mga kapwa ko nurses and other medical frontliners sa panahon ngayon na pandemic," she said. —MGP, GMA News
