TikTok star Charli D’Amelio loses over 1M followers after controversial vlog, cries over backlash
TikTok star Charli D’Amelio lost a massive amount of followers after supposedly making ungrateful statements and being rude during a recent family YouTube vlog.
In a video titled "Dinner With the D’Amelios" posted Monday, beauty vlogger James Charles joined the 16-year-old dancer, her older sister Dixie and their parents for dinner.
At one point, Charli told James that she hoped she'd reach 100 million TikToker followers within a year of surpassing 1 million followers.
James then sarcastically asked, "Was the 95 [million] not enough for you?"
Netizens also criticized Charli and Dixie for supposedly being "rude" to the personal chef who prepared their dinner.
The sisters acted disgusted after learning they were eating snails. Dixie repeatedly made gagging noises and gestures even after the chef explained the dish.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Charli has been boasting the highest number of followers on TikTok.
However, the young dancer's follower count as of Thursday went from about 99.4 million to 98.5 million since her family posted "Dinner With the D’Amelios" on Wednesday.
'Not okay'
Charli eventually addressed the hate on Instagram live, saying her remark about hitting 100 million followers was misunderstood.
"I genuinely just thought it would be so cool to hit a huge huge milestone a year after hitting another milestone," she explained.
"I never meant for you guys to…make it seem like you were numbers or do not mean anything," she added.
Charli also broke into tears while saying the backlash she and her older sister Dixie have been getting was "not okay."
"Like, that's not okay. You can hate on me for whatever I've done but the fact that all of this is happening because of a misunderstanding, like, I just feel like that's not okay," she said.
"And if this is the community that I'm in and the community that I put myself in, I don't know if I wanna do that anymore," she added.
James also came to Charli's defense on Twitter, relating her situation to his own after being dragged on social media over several controversies.
this charli situation is NOT sitting right with me... 100M followers in one year & y'all expect her to know how to be a perfect role model? death threats because she's a picky eater & made a joke about a milestone? 30+ year olds dragging someone half their age? feels familiar ????
