‘Respect Taylor Swift’ trends as fans address jokes made on two Netflix shows about the singer

“Respect Taylor Swift” trended on Twitter on Monday as fans addressed a joke made on the shows “Ginny & Georgia” and “Degrassi: Next Class” about the singer.

In one episode of “Ginny & Georgia,” a character said a line that talked about the singer’s dating life: “What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift.”

“Degrassi: Next Class,” meanwhile, also mentioned the singer in a bad light, making fans furious: “Taylor Swift made an entire career off of her exes.”

According to the fans, it is not right to attack Taylor personally because of how she chooses to write her songs and date.

“Reminder that people can date whomsoever they want. Last time I checked taylor swift was more famous and talented than many of you misogynists will ever be,” one fan wrote.

They even cited male singers who use their past relationships as inspirations for their songs, clearly highlighting the unjust judgment made by the shows.

“Taylor swift did write about her exes just like ed sheeran and shawn hv done but no one talks about them. why? [because] they are men?” a tweet said.

To set the record straight, one brought up a quote said by Taylor in one of her past interviews addressing the same issue.

"I think that’s a very sexist angle to take. No one says that about Ed Sheeran. No one says that about Bruno Mars. They’re all writing songs about their exes, their current girlfriends, their love life and no one raises a red flag there,” she said.

Fans also find it contradicting that Netflix is all for International Women’s Month but are tolerating such shows that promote misogyny and inequality.

“You can’t have it both ways- can’t post her icon for international women’s day & then include misogynistic lines in your shows. Take the line out. Respect Taylor Swift,” a tweet said.

In light of the issue, fans are citing Taylor’s song “The Man” which represents the unjust treatment between men and women in society.

“Taylor just explains everything her. She wrote the song #THEMAN to tell the people that if she was the man and did everything that she did right now but in a man’s body and dating so many women that won’t be an issue,” a fan wrote.

As of writing, the topic already has more than 170,000 tweets. — Franchesca Viernes/LA, GMA News
