These Gen Zers' modern take on Tinikling is taking social media by storm
Filipino Gen Zers based in Georgia, USA are taking the traditional Philippine folk dance Tinikling to the international stage with their modern take on the dance.
The Tuesday episode of "Dapat Alam Mo!" had a group of Filipino students sharing how their dance, dubbed as "Gen Z Tinikling" went viral.
Using two bamboo poles, the featured students from Georgia Tech Filipino Student Association (GTFSA) were full of energy in performing "Gen-Z Tinikling," which was part of their cultural presentation in school.
GTFSA was formed in 2020 with an aim to keep the Filipino culture and traditions alive wherever they are.
"This really help keep our culture alive especially on-campus. We have a lot of Fil-Am like me who grew up not speaking Tagalog or knowing much the culture. Being able to teach some members about the community, about the culture makes me really happy," said Kevin Guernsey, a member of GTFSA.
On social media, GTFSA's video of "Gen Z Tinikling" went viral with over 6.3 million views and more than 103,000 shares.
"I was really proud because we put a lot of hard work and a lot of time making sure that the dances are perfect. I was just really happy that our hard work was being recognized," Kevin added.
Aside from Tinikling, the GTFSA also creates modern twists on other Philippine folklore dances such as Singkil and Maglalatik.
