Grade 5 pupil from Cavite performs Pabasa, earns admiration online

A Grade 5 pupil earned the admiration of many online after he was caught on video performing his devotions for Holy Week: doing the Pabasa.

According to Kuya Kim's report on "24 Oras," Tuesday, Diego Andrade, 11, began performing the Pabasa when he was eight years old. He said he learned it from his grandmother, Yolanda.

The boy said he honed his singing talents as a choir member in their parish church.

"Masaya po ako na nakita po ako at nai-share ko po ang aking talento, magbasa ng Pasyon," he said. "Wala nang hihigit pa rito sa aking panata kada taon."

The Pabasa ng Pasyon is a traditionally performed during Holy Week. Pasyon is an epic poem narrating the life of Jesus Christ.

These days, the Pabasa is usually done by the elderly. Not many young people do it, so Diego has been praised for his devotion.

For his part, he vowed to continue performing the Pabasa. He also said he wants to be a priest someday.

"Dahil din po ito sa tawag ng Diyos at nakahiligan ko rin po talagang sumama sa mga gawaing pang-Parokya," he said.
