Marcos declares Sept. 12 as Day of National Mourning over Resil B. Mojares's death

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has declared September 12 as a Day of National Mourning over the passing of National Artist for Literature Resil B. Mojares.

Signed on September 10, Proclamation No. 1434 states that Mojares' passing is a great loss to the Filipino people and to the nation's cultural and artistic community.

"His outstanding contribution as a pivotal figure in Philippine literature and cultural studies has significantly enriched the nation's understanding and appreciation of its literary and cultural heritage," the proclamation read.

"The nation mourns and joins the family and friends of National Artist Resil B. Mojares in this moment of grief and remembrance," it added.

The Philippine flag will be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on September 12 across all government buildings and installations in the country and abroad.

Mojares was announced to have passed away on September 5 at the age of 83.

He was conferred the title of National Artist for Literature in 2018 in recognition of his contributions to Philippine literature and scholarship. As the founding director of the Cebuano Studies Center, an institution that helped put Cebu on the map for research and documentation, Mojares also played a pioneering role in shaping Cebuano and national identity.

The Cebu City government paid its final respects to Mojares on Thursday at Cebu City Hall. —JCB, GMA News
