When the phrase "art destination" crops up in a conversation, one's mind immediately conjures up images of Paris and the Louvre, or Florence, "city of Renaissance," with its palaces, monuments, and religious buildings.

But the Philippines as an "art destination": is it really possible?

The organizers of the country’s biggest art fair – ManilART 2013 – believe it is.

Anna Sobrepeña, editor-in-chief of Lifestyle Asia, one of the supporters of ManilART 2013, said it is the "collective dream of art galleries and artists" for the Philippines to become an art destination – and that this is possible because the country has enough creative, world-class talent.

"We have something to share with the world," said Sobrepeña during the ManilART 2013 press conference at the SMX Aura Convention Center in Bonifacio Global City.

This will be the same venue where ManilART 2013 will run from October 9 to 13. Under one roof, the event will gather the best Philippine contemporary artworks through exhibits of the country's top art galleries.

There will also be forums, workshops, and other activities for art aficionados, artists, collectors, and investors.

Sobrepeña noted how Filipino artists are doing well in the international art scene that even the works of lesser known artists are "selling in the millions" at Sotheby’s, Christie’s, or the small art houses in Singapore and Hong Kong.

She recalled how even in Paris, Philippine culture and arts were featured in the Musee du Quai Branly from April 9 (Araw ng Kagitingan) to July 14 (Bastille Day) this year in the first large exhibition dedicated to Philippine traditional and ancestral arts in Europe.

Sobrepeña also believes that the annual ManilART can become a reason for the world’s art lovers to come to the country every October.

Now in its 5th year, ManilART is a venue for featuring new creative talents, celebrating respected Filipino artists, and bringing art appreciation into the cultural mainstream.

Organized by the Bonafide Art Galleries Organization (BAGO), ManilART 2013 is supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Last year, more than 40 art galleries featuring 1,400 artworks of 500 artists participated in ManilART, which was attended by more than 11,000 visitors.

This year, ManilART will feature more regional galleries as a way of supporting artistic communities outside the National Capital Region.

ManilART will also hold pocket exhibits in different parts of the country, including Cebu, where a Cebu Caravan can be viewed at the Henry Hotel.

ManilART is also more active in promoting the event on social media, featuring short bios and artworks of different artists on its official Facebook page.

Some entries feature Philippine art greats such as Juan Luna, while others shed some light on lesser-known contemporary artists.

The ManilART Facebook page also features various contests, giving the public a chance to win entry tickets to the ManilART 2013 fair in October or win bags or tumblers imprinted with contemporary Filipino artworks.

Also on its Facebook page, ManilART says: "ManilART's goal is simple: We want everyone to know how diverse, wonderfully creative and unbelievably brilliant Philippine artists are! We want to honor them by giving them a platform where they are showcased for all to see. We aim for people to have a deep appreciation for Philippine art, its historical legacy and impact in our future."

Some artworks to look forward to

Young figurative artist Aleah Angeles will have her first solo show during the ManilART 2013 at the booth of the Mendez Big and Small Art Company, owned by celebrity doctor Dr. Joel Mendez.

Dubbed "Seed," the show will feature Angeles’ trademark lyrical and romantic large-scale paintings of innocent young girls.

Angeles is one of the country’s rising new talents. Last year, her painting "Lazy Daisy"” was auctioned off by Christie’s Hong Kong for nearly twice its estimated value, selling at $7,759 when its original estimate price was $4,138.

Meanwhile, Galleria Duemila, another of the country’s top art galleries, will feature various works of art such as "Maranao (Kombong 1)" a work in terra cotta by Julie Lluch; "Fertile is the night" by Dudley Diaz in polychrome hardwood and acrylic; "Piano Teacher" by Onib Olmedo in ink wash on paper; and "The straggling artist" by Lindsey James Lee, featuring a taxidermy turkey, rolled paintings and fluorescent lights. — BM, GMA News
