Senator Pia Cayetano raised on Tuesday (Philippine time) the Rizal Monument issue to an international body, hoping to get support from experts to stop the construction of a 49-storey condominium that obstructs the visual corridors of the shrine.

A press statement released on Tuesday stated that Cayetano, who also heads the Senate Committee on Education, Arts and Culture, is in Florence, Italy to attend the 18th general assembly of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

"We hope to gather international support for our campaign to stop the Torre de Manila project and its developer, DM Consunji, Inc. (DMCI), from desecrating the sight line and integrity of the Rizal Monument," said Cayetano.

ICOMOS is composed of 9,500 heritage conservation experts from all around the world, providing expertise and support for threated heritage sites.

The agency is also an advisory body to the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee. It is tasked to nominate cultural and historical sites for inclusion in the World Heritage List.

Cayetano added, "After my initial visits to UNESCO and the ICOMOS headquarters in Paris, I learned how around the world, governments, NGOs, businesses and communities have united to protect their heritage sites. And there are many examples of structures and buildings found to be obstructing these sites that were struck down."

During a senate hearing in August, Cayetano also expressed that the court may order a demolition of the P1-billion project.

On September 12, the Order of the Knights of Rizal asked the Supreme Court to issue a temporary restraining order on the project.

Meanwhile, ICOMOS Philippines president Architect Augusto Villalon is set to give a lecture at the event about Vigan City as the best showcase of heritage site management practice in the Philippines. On October 8, it was announced that the city made it to the next round of the New7Wonders cities search.  VC, GMA News
