Soon after the Philippine High School for the Arts celebrated its 37th anniversary, Typhoon Glenda devastated many of its facilities: many of its theaters, studios, dormitories, and even some high voltage transmission lines were in need of repair.
This, compounded by the loss of several distinguished alumni—Don Salubayba, Gerard Baja, and David Sicam—in one year made 2014 a sad one for the school, indeed.
However, seven months after the wake of the storm, PHSA Director IV Vim Nadera said in a press release, “We are still here, ready to be healed by the arts again,” with the Makiling Inter-Cultural Arts Festival (MAKILINC), ongoing until Feb 7.

Just in time for National Arts Month, MAKILINC will feature a week's worth of lectures, talks, demos, exhibits, seminars, and workshops. Performers will include PHSA performing arts companies such as the Anino Shadowplay Collective, Kuwit, Maquiling Ballet, Musika Ibarang, Sanghiyas Pangkat Mananayaw, and Sipat-Lawin.
For a taste of what's in store, according to the press release, MAKILINC offerings include “Edru Abraham, who will teach gamelan and mime; Gim Gwang Cheol, who will tackle modern Korean art; Michael Coroza, who will revive balagtasan; Rama, who will introduce pangalay; Evamaria Schaller, who will deal with experimental art; and Ian Victoriano. who will share his secrets about scriptwriting.”
