MAP: Doing the Visita Iglesia in Metro Manila

One of the traditions of Holy Week in the Philippines is the Visita Iglesia, in which devotees go from one church to another on Maundy Thursday—usually for a total of seven churches visited.

Many theologians believe seven to be the number of divine perfection. It is one of the most mentioned numbers in the Bible: in the Book of Genesis, God created the world in seven days. In the Book of Revelation, John of Patmos mentioned seven churches, seven angels, seven seals, seven trumpets, seven thunders, and the seven last plagues.

Being home to about 80 million Catholics, the Philippines has no shortage of churches and cathedrals to visit on Thursday. In the National Capital Region alone there are hundreds of options for Metro Manilans.

Here are just a few of the churches devotees in Metro Manila can visit during the Visita Iglesia. (Click on the plus sign to zoom in, and click on each icon to see information about the churches.)
