Brillante Mendoza's "Taklub", which premiered earlier this month at the Cannes Film Festival, received a special commendation from the festival's Ecumenical Jury.

The film, which was shown under the festival's Un Certain Regard category, stars Nora Aunor and tells the story of three survivors of Typhoon Yolanda. According to a press release from the office of Sen. Loren Legarda, the festival commended the film “for the sensitive portrayal of individuals and communities working for life in the midst of suffering and death in the shadows of natural catastrophes in the Philippines.”

The Ecumenical Jury is an independent jury that sits at various film festivals, including Cannes. At Cannes, it is one of three juries. According to its dossier, the Ecumenical Jury "has a particular perspective on the films. It honors works of artistic quality which witness to the power of film to reveal the mysterious depths of human beings through what concerns them, their hurts and failings as well as their hopes. It draws attention to those works of quality which touch the spiritual dimension of our existence, expressing the values of justice, human dignity, respect for the environment, peace and solidarity.” — BM, GMA News
