(From left) French Ambassador to the Philippines Gilles Garachon, Film Development Council of the Philippines chairman Briccio Santos, director Brillante Mendoza, actress Nora Aunor, Stores Specialists Inc. marketing communications manager Malu Francisco and Ayala Land AVP Myrna Fernandez led the opening of 20th French Film Festival in Greenbelt, Makati City on June 3, 2015.
The film, which was shown under Cannes' Un Certain Regard category, stars Nora Aunor and tells the story of the survivors of super Typhoon Yolanda. According to a press release from the office of Senator Loren Legarda, the principal advocate of the film, the festival commended the film "for the sensitive portrayal of individuals and communities working for life in the midst of suffering and death in the shadows of natural catastrophes in the Philippines."
Before the start of the screening, Legarda also explained how the film was conceptualized. After Yolanda, Legarda tapped Mendoza to make a documentary film about the issue.
"How can we help the Filipino people understand the importance of preparedness or disaster risk reduction or climate change adaptation?" she asked him.
But the award-winning director suggested making a feature film instead and tapped Aunor for the lead role. "Taklub" was then produced by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in cooperation with the Presidential Communications Operations Office-Philippine Information Agency (PCOO-PIA).
Legarda said that she envisioned the film to be screened in schools and cinemas for free, but did not expect the film to make it to Cannes.
"This is the product of the efficient convergence of government agencies that are working with brilliant artists like Nora Aunor and director Brillante Mendoza," she said.
The festival
The French Film Festival will feature at least 10 films, which will be screened from June 3-9 at the Greenbelt 3 cinemas in Makati City and Bonifacio High Street cinemas in Taguig City.
"Reaching the 20th edition of the French Film Festival shows that Filipinos are genuinely curious to know more about French language, culture and society. Filipinos want to learn more about the French and vice versa, and what better way to facilitate this than through cinema," French Ambassador Gilles Garachon said in a statement.
Tickets for each screening are priced at P100, which are available at the box office or through www.sureseats.com.
