Will anyone take ‘Gods of Egypt’ seriously?

Gerald Butler as a Spartan, maybe. But Gerald Butler—a white Scotsman—as Set, the god of the dry Egyptian deserts? Hm.

Accusations of whitewashing were thrown at "Gods of Egypt" even before it hit the theaters—and even before the #OscarsSoWhite backlash started against the Academy Awards. After seeing the movie, it would be fair to say that casting white Americans and Europeans as Egyptians is not even the biggest sin they committed when they made this film.

This is basically "Clash of the Titans" replaced by other gods and goddesses: an '80s adventure flick geared towards 10-year-olds...or basically anyone distracted by shiny things. There are things to look at and the plot moves along, but absolutely nothing in the movie stood out. No, not even the sassy African-American character. Chadwick Boseman as Thoth did his best, but how long can a token really take you?

At least "Exodus: Gods and Kings" tried and it looked pretty good. "Gods of Egypt" seems so exhausted with itself, it went with the obvious and called deus ex machina upon deus ex machina. There's a plethora of divine beings around, yes, but come on. Ra (Geoffrey Rush) was already dead.

A God brought a God back to life to defeat another God. That happened in this movie.

Is nobody casting Rush in films? Because he's still pretty good as an actor and if there was a rating to this review, the movie would receive one star—specifically for his dedication to give a good performance despite the lame script. Meanwhile, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who plays Horus, just seems happy to be doing other things aside from not dying yet in "Game of Thrones."

Ultimately, "Gods of Egypt" feels like someone fitted a hat on a monkey and they put it on a stool, made it dance and hoped really hard that someone would find it amusing. We've seen it before and yes, it's cute. If we had coins to spare, maybe we'll take pity...but really, it's cruel what you're doing to these monkeys. They deserve better. — BM, GMA News
