Strolling back in time with ‘Balik Tanaw sa Maynila’
Ladies in baro't saya shielding themselves from the sun with frilly parasols; frailes in robes and sandals; Chinese taho vendors carrying their wares hanging from shoulder poles—denizens from the city's past strolled the Baywalk on Roxas Boulevard on Monday as part of "Balik Tanaw sa Maynila", the city's week-long commemoration of Araw ng Maynila. Other participants, also in traditional Filipino outfits, performed dances such as the tinikling and the pandanggo sa ilaw.
The activities of "Balik Tanaw sa Maynila," including a photo exhibit, dances and live music, can be witnessed on the Roxas Boulevard Baywalk from June 20 to 23.
Araw ng Maynila commemorates the date in 1571 when Manila was formally founded as a city by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. June 24 will be the 445th Foundation Day of the Philippines' capital.
