One of the most iconic science fiction films of the 80’s is going to get the sequel it so rightfully deserves later this year, as director Denis Villeneuve ("Arrival") and executive producer Ridley Scott bring the neo-noir world of “Blade Runner” to a new generation of viewers.

“Blade Runner 2049” picks up 30 years after the events of the first film. In a new trailer released Monday, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling) is the new blade runner charged with checking on the replicants. In the midst of doing his job, he discovers a dark secret that may bring an end to humanity—and goes on a quest to find the legendary Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), the original blade runner who disappeared years ago.

Based on Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, “Blade Runner” was polarized critics when it was released in 1982, yet gained a cult following internationally as the years went on. Depicting a neo-noir future and showing concepts that would later influence other futuristic sci-fi movies and works, the film was selected for preservation by the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

The sequel, which has been in development since 1999, was officially confirmed in February with Villeneuve attached.

Also co-starring Dave Bautista and Jared Leto, "Blade Runner 2049" will be released in theaters in the Philippines in October. — BM, GMA News
