September 2019 to September 2020 declared centennial year for PHL cinema
President Rodrigo Duterte has tasked the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) to lead the implementation of programs and activities for the Centennial Year of Philippine Cinema.
Signed by the President on November 8, Proclamation 622 sets September 12, 2019 to September 11, 2020 as the period of celebration.
The proclamation said the movie "Dalagang Bukid," which was considered the first Filipino-produced and directed feature film, premiered on September 12, 1919.
Starring future national artist Atang dela Rama, the silent film was directed by Jose Nepomuceno, who was said to be the Father of Philippine Movies.
"[T]he Constitution provides that the State shall conserve, promote and popularize the nation's historical and cultural heritage and resources, as well as artistic creations," the proclamation read.
"[T]he enhancement of the social fabric, by promoting Philippine culture and values, safeguarding the Philippine cultural heritage and sustaining and enhancing cultural assets, is one of the overriding objectives of the government under the Philippine Development Plan 2017-2022," it added. — BM, GMA News
