Definitions for 'stan', 'receipts' and 'unplug' now part of Merriam-Webster Dictionary
Who said dictionaries couldn't keep up with the ever evolving English language?
Before you even unplug, we have receipts of the latest additions, and they're totally to stan for!
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary added over 640 words to its list, including "stan", "receipts", and "unplug".
The dictionary defined "stan" as "to exhibit fandom to an extreme or excessive degree." The word, which has become popular in online culture, is a reference to the 2000 song by Eminem featuring Dido about a crazed fan.
The dictionary added the new meaning of "receipts" as proof or evidence
"Unplug", on the other hand, is defined as "to temporarily refrain from using electronic devices (such as computers or smartphone)" or also "to temporarily withdraw from responsibilities and obligations of everyday life (such as work or home duties)."
Merriam-Webster Dictionary said that in order for a word to even be added, there has to be evidence of widespread usage.
"It begins, in each case, with evidence of word in use. Each word follows its own path at its own pace before its use is widespread enough to be included in a dictionary," it said.
"We watch as words move from specialized contexts to more general use and we make citations for each word in order to draft our definitions. This means, in other words, that we have the receipts," it added.
Among the other words also added are "gender nonconforming", "gig economy", "on-brand", and "screen time". —JST, GMA News
