5 things about Miss Earth Philippines 2020 Roxanne Baeyens of Baguio

Baguio City's Roxanne Baeyens was just crowned the new Miss Philippines Earth on July 5, Sunday.

In a virtual coronation event which was on live telecast on GMA Network, the 23-year-old beauty queen hailing from the "Summer Capital of the Philippines" showed what it takes to win the crown.

Roxanne has been vocal about her environmental advocacy and during the final Q&A where the five finalists were asked, "what important quality should a leader display amidst a pandemic?" Roxanne gave an answer befitting the title Miss Philippines Earth:

A leader should display having a green thumb because at this point in time we have a shortage in food supply so it's important to open the eyes of people to embrace having a sustainable life to start urban agriculture at their own homes after all a green life is a better life and I hope the leader will give that to us.

Here are more things about Roxanne you might not know about.

1. She's not a pageant newbie

This is not the first pageant Roxanne joined and won. In 2019, Roxanne was named Miss Tourism & Culture Universe Philippines.

 

 

Last September, she represented the Philippines in Myanmar, where she finished first runner-up.

 

 

2. Her mother has been her inspiration for her environmental advocacy

Roxanne's mother is also an environmentalist, which played a big role in her chosen advocacy. According to Miss Philippines Earth's website, Roxanne wanted to continue the legacy of her family and "be the change I want to see in the world."

In her Instagram post last Mother's Day, Roxanne said she has planted her first three as early as she was only six years old. The action bloomed to make urban farming her advocacy.

She said her mother is her "Eco-Queen" who influenced her to become the woman she is now.

 

 

3. She has a soft spot  for animals

Roxanne also has a soft spot for animals. Amid the lockdown, she has been helping feed stray fur babies, who were left hungry for days.

Due to the lockdown they have been left hungry for days having not enough source of food and water which they normally get from street vendors or people they come across with. Those pets who have a home, some owners say they don’t even have enough food to eat for themselves. If you head out to the grocery store and come across them please do not hesitate to show even just a bit of compassion by sharing the food or water you have bought. To add to this, there is no evidence that any pet can transmit Corona virus. 5. Her boyfriend is a basketball player from JRU
