Filipinx filmmaker is the Juried Prize winner of the 2020 PBS Short Film Festival

Los Angeles-based Filipinx filmmaker Drama Del Rosario is the Juried Prize winner in the 2020 PBS Short Film Festival for his short documentary "In This Family."

In his documentary, Drama looked at his life ten years after he was outed as gay to his parents by his teacher.

His film had raw audio recordings of his conservative Catholic Filipino family's reactions after they found out that he was gay in 2007.

In the film, he also shared how at some point he was physically abused by his father, who initially didn't accept him.

The documentary ended on a lighter notem with Drama's parents, particularly his father, finally accepting and loving him for who he is.

In his interview with GMA Pinoy TV "Becoming Pinoy," Drama talked about how he had kept those raw and real audio recordings of his parents reactions and how his first personal documentary "In This Family" came to be.

"We're very conservative Catholic Filipinos and so having a gay son to them was like red flag and that was so bad, so I thought as a little teenager what if I record my parents yelling at me and so I did that," he narrated.

"I had kept these audio recordings of my parents yelling at me...then 2017 came and I was like it's been ten years since I came out to my parents. I think it's time to unearth these recordings and try to make something interesting," he added.

On Facebook, Drama announced his win and thanked those who have watched and voted for his documentary.

"Your support has been so overwhelming, and I am so moved by all the messages from queer youth, parents of queer children, and teachers of queer students," he wrote.
