So what’s the strange gigantic statue at SM Megamall all about?

If you’re among those who frequent SM Megamall or pass by EDSA, you must have noticed by now the strange towering statue at the popular mall in Mandaluyong City.

With a box-like figure as a head and a body made of different slanted planes, the statue depicts a man intently looking at his watch.

So what’s this tall statue depicting a man looking at his watch all about?

According to SM, the recently unveiled 12-meter statue made of mirror stainless steel is called the “Time Sculpture” designed by Filipino-American public artist Jefre Manuel Figueras, also known as JEFRË.

With the art piece, JEFRË wanted it to become a reminder for people that time is valuable and that “even when stuck in traffic, people should learn how to respect the idea of time by using it productively.” The three-dimensional planes also hoped to portray that “people are the building blocks of the city.”

The statue is part of JEFRË’s first signature works called “Baks series,” named after the phonetic pronunciation of the word “box.”

JEFRË, an award-winning public artist based in Chicago, Illinois, studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Ohio State University, and Architectural Association in London.  He created the “Talking Heads,” a permanent installation featuring six large sculptures at SM Prime’s Five Ecom Center Building, as well as the carabao, eagle, rooster, and tarsier sculptures at SM Aura Premier. – RC, GMA News
