John Arcilla bags Best Actor award at Venice Film Festival for 'On the Job: The Missing 8'
John Arcilla made history on Sunday (PHL time) as the first Filipino to bag the Coppa Volpi (Volpi Cup) for Best Actor at the 78th Venice Film Festival for his performance in the film "On the Job: The Missing 8."
Arcilla won the coveted award for his role as Sisoy Salas in the movie directed by Eric Matti.
"On the Job: The Missing 8" is among the official entries for the main competition of the film fest. Apart from Arcilla, the film also stars Kapuso actor Dennis Trillo and Dante Rivero. It revolves around a journalist who looks into the disappearance of his colleagues.
Trillo, who is also in Venice for the festival, shared a video on Instagram of Arcilla giving his speech after his name was announced as the winner.
Arcilla first expressed his thanks in Italian, then said he regrets not being there personally to accept the Volpi Cup.
"Well if there is something that I really regret tonight is that I will not be able to kiss my own Volpi Cup there in the middle of Venice and on that red carpet just like the other 77 great actors whom I admire who have already kissed their own, this most wonderful and prestigious award...," he said.
"So I am also the happiest actor tonight of course also because I know that we came from different countries and we have different languages and cultures and yet I can feel oneness tonight and I can feel that you understand me and we understand each other. It’s because of the art of cinema," Arcilla said.
On Instagram, Arcilla shared on Saturday (PHL time) a video of the audience giving the film "On the Job: The Missing 8" a five-minute standing ovation during its first showing at the film festival.
A day before, Arcilla posted on Instagram a photo of 2007 Coppa Volpi for Best Actor winner Brad Pitt holding his trophy, and the Filipino actor posted this caption: "Here is the roster of some Great Actors who won the most coveted Volpi Cup at the Venice international Film Festival. I wish we can have one someday! Hahahaha if you dream as they say. Dream big! God bless everyone."
Trillo commented and wrote, "Hindi magtatagal ay mangyayari din yan Heneral???????? @johnarcilla."
According to the Film Development Council of the Philippines, “On the Job: The Missing 8” is the only Southeast Asian film selected for the main competition, which has 21 entries.
The 78th Venice International Film Festival released the list of entries in July.
The event, with the theme “The Venice Biennale: Cinema in the Time of COVID,” ran from Sept. 1 to 11.
Meanwhile, "On the Job: The Missing 8" will also be shown in the cities of Rome and Milan. —KG, GMA News
