National Artist Kidlat Tahimik launches historical exhibit in Madrid’s Retiro Park

National Artist Kidlat Tahimik is showcasing some historical Filipino art at the Palacio de Cristal in Madrid, Spain.

According to the Museo Reina Sofia, the exhibit entitled  “Magallanes, Marilyn, Mickey and fray Damaso. 500 years of Rockstar Conquerors” can be viewed at the Crystal Palace of the Retiro Park from October 29 to March 6, 2022.

“In this project, Tahimik, reviews the past of the Crystal Palace (built on the occasion of the General Exhibition of the Philippine Islands in 1887) the history of colonialism in the Philippines and the influence of cultural imperialism today,” the brief description posted on their Facebook says.

“The sample is articulated through a large epic scenario composed of three sculptural sets that refer to so many other key moments in the history of colonialism in the Philippines,” it adds.

Eric Oteyza de Guia, better known as Kidlat Tahimik, is an installation artist, film director, writer and actor known as the “Father of Philippine Independent Film.”

The 79-year-old National Artist from Baguio opened up about a battle with COVID-19 last December.
