Black Nazarene traslacion: When did it start?

Catholic devotees observe in January the annual traslacion, where the Black Nazarene is transferred from Intramuros to Quiapo Church.

As explained on “24 Oras” Friday, the traslacion began on Jan. 9, 1787, upon the orders of then Archbishop Basilio Tomas Sancho de Santas Justa Y Rufina.

Meanwhile, to prevent possible damage during the procession, a replica of the Black Nazarene’s head is fitted to the original body before it is transported.

The original head, meanwhile, is left at the church and placed on a replica body. – RC, GMA News
