Creator of GIF Stephen Wilhite dies at 74
Creator of the looping animated GIF image format Stephen Wilhite has died. He was 74 years old.
According to a report on NBC News, the death was confirmed in an obituary which said that Wilhite died on March 14, days after his 74th birthday on March 3.
Additionally, the report said Wilhite died of COVID-19 which was confirmed by his wife Kathaleen.
Wilhite, who began his career at Compuserve, the first major commercial online service provider, created the Graphics Interchange Format or GIF while at the company, the report said.
According to the report, Wlhite received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Webby Awards for his invention and his contribution to internet culture.
"He was an avid camper and loved travelling and camping. Even with all his accomplishments, he remained a very humble, kind, and good man," his obituary read. —JAB, GMA News.
