Chito Miranda overwhelmed with Parokya ni Edgar musical, says he never thought their songs were theater-worthy

"Overwhelming.” This was what Chito Miranda said as he described how he felt watching Buruguduystunstugudunstuy: Ang Parokya ni Edgar Musical.

The Parokya vocalist attended the gala night of the play on Thursday, along with his wife Neri Miranda, and his bandmates, Gab Chee Kee, Buwi Meneses, Darius Semaña, Dindin Moreno, and Vinci Montaner.

In an interview with GMA News Online, Chito shared that he never would’ve thought their songs would be in a musical.

“Never, never. Noong opening night, we were hanging out with our high school classmates. They watched it also, and they were all, ‘akalain niyo?’ Kase they saw kung paano kami nag-start. How we started as just a bunch of guys with a guitar tapos biglang may musical na. It’s really flattering and overwhelming also,” Chito said.

He even revealed that he was reluctant to push the production forward as he did not consider their songs theatre-worthy.

With this, Chito thanked the entire team, cast members, Manila Philharmonic Orchestra, and NWR Theater.

“Salamat sa lahat ng tiwala na gawin itong project na ito. Alam niyo naman na reluctant ako nung start because we didn’t trust our songs but you made something very magical. So thank you very much,” he said.

Moreover, the Parokya vocalist stressed that what he liked the most in Buruguduystunstugudunstuy is how it conveyed issues that most people do not discuss and how it created a colourful meaning behind their songs.

“It's a totally surreal experience kasi in-elevate nila 'yung meaning ng songs for me. I wrote it with a certain sense of how I felt, kung ano 'yung message na kino-convey ko, not just my songs, even the other songs of my bandmates wrote. Pero they gave it a totally different colorful meaning, for me nakakaluha,” Chito added.

The Parokya ni Edgar musical was first announced in July 2023 during the final curtain call of "Ang Huling El Bimbo."

The cast of the musical was completed and announced together with the creative team in December.

“Buruguduystunstugudunstuy” is Parokya’s debut album released in 1997. It is home to the OPM classics “Harana,” “Silvertoes,” “Sayang,” and “Please Don’t Touch My Birdie.”
