'Here Lies Love' garners 4 nominations at the 2024 Tony Awards

Broadway musical "Here Lies Love," which follows  the rise and fall of former First Lady Imelda Marcos, garnered four nominations at the 2024 Tony Awards.

"Here Lies Love" earned Tony nominations for the following categories: Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre, Best Scenic Design of a Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, and Best Choreography.

The prestigious awards program, which recognizes the best in live Broadway theater, will be held on June 16 in New York City, United States.

David Byrne and DJ Fatboy Slim co-wrote the disco-pop musical, which featured an all-Filipino cast.

Tony and Olivier Award-winning Lea Salonga starred in the musical as Aurora Aquino, while Conrad Ricamora played the role of her son, the martyred former Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino. The rest of the cast included Arielle Jacobs (Imelda) Jose Llana (former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.), and Melody Butiu (Estrella).

Actress Vina Morales marked her Broadway debut in "Here Lies Love," replacing Salonga for Aurora's role.

The musical was produced by other Filipino personalities such as singer-songwriter H.E.R., comedian Jo Koy, G Tongi, Jose Antonio Vargas, and Clint Ramos.

"Here Lies Love" closed last Nov. 26 following 33 previews and 149 regular performances, the reason of which due to low ticket sales and high costs of sustaining the show's production. —Cody Cepeda/JCB, GMA Integrated News
