Margarita Fores, the chef and restauranteur behind Cibo, has died

Margarita Fores, the brilliant restaurateur and chef who gave us Cibo, Lusso, and Grace Park, to name a few of her restaurants, has died. She was 65.

Her son, Amado, confirmed the news on social media Tuesday, February 11.

"It is with a heavy heart that I share the sudden passing of my Mom, Margarita A. Forés," he wrote on Instagram.

"Our family is mourning this unexpected loss, and we kindly ask for your prayers during this time. We will be able to share more in due time," he added.

Margarita enlivened the Metro Manila restaurant scene when she opened Cibo in 1997, a chic and casual Italian restaurant that quickly became a hit thanks to its delicious, no-nonsense fare.

Soon, she opened more restaurants like Cafe Bola, Pepato, Lusso, Grace Park, as well as a catering business Cibo di Marghi.

In 2016, she was named Asia's Best Female Chef

Margarita did not just build an empire of restaurants, she also championed local produce and the "farm-to-table" philosophy. In the past decade, she served not only local VIPs but also heads of states.

Already an accountant, Margarita took a trip to Italy that made her shift careers. Upon her return to Manila, she opened Cibo and the rest is history.

In recent years, she started collaborating with her son, Amado, who himself opened a few restaurants like Amano and Steak and Frice.

Our hearts go out to Margarita's family and loved ones.

Thank you Margarita for introducing us to good food and feeding us delicious fare every single time.
