Karylle touched by Encantadia's impact on LGBT+ community, girl power

Karylle is grateful and deeply moved by the lasting impact of "Encantadia" on its viewers, especially among the LGBT+ community and women who found empowerment through the Kapuso series.

On Wednesday's "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda," Karylle was asked how important the iconic fantaserye was in her career, and she admitted that she and her co-stars never expected it to become such a cultural phenomenon.

"I think dahil hindi namin inasahan na magiging gano'n siya, kind of like a cultural thing, siyempre nagpapasalamat kami sa lahat ng umaamin na kasama kami sa kanilang paglaki at pagkamulat sa kung ano man ang mga gusto nilang gawin sa buhay," she said.

She recalled how many members of the LGBT+ community would tell her that Encantadia was part of their happy childhood.

"For that to happen was so beautiful, para maging part of women power, ang kababaihan, ganiyan. Sabi ko, hindi naman kasi dati about branding, 'di ba? So it was beautiful. I don't think it was an intentional part in a marketing standpoint, so kaya siya sobrang ganda," she said.

Karylle, who played Alena in the show's original run in 2005, is among the hosts of "It's Showtime."

Meanwhile, "Encantadia's" current spin-off series, "Sang'gre," features a new generation of gem keepers played by Bianca Umali, Angel Guardian, Faith Da Silva, and Kelvin Miranda.

"Encantadia Chronicles: Sang'gre" airs on GMA Network from Mondays to Fridays at 8 p.m. after "24 Oras." You can also watch it online via the Kapuso Stream on YouTube. —Carby Rose Basina/MGP, GMA Integrated News
