The musical features music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman, and book by David Greig. It is based on Roald Dahl's novel of the same name.

It follows Charlie Bucket, a poor but kind boy who wins a Golden Ticket to tour Willy Wonka’s magical chocolate factory. While other children are punished for their bad behavior, Charlie’s honesty and humility earn him Wonka’s trust and a life-changing reward.

It was adapted into a movie in 2005, which starred Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and Freddie Highmore as Charlie.

Its prequel, “Wonka,” starring Timothee Chalamet, was released in 2023.
