At Coachella, another musical act with a Filipina singer performs
Is it safe to say that Filipino representation is well and good at Coachella Valley Arts and Festival this year?
After BINI and Katseye, there was a third musical act that featured a Filipina singer during its performance.
Nine Inch Noize, the collaborative project between legendary industrial band Nine Inch Nails (NIN) and Boys Noize, performed at the Sahara Tent of Coachella with none other than Mariqueen Maandig as one of its vocalists.
Maandig, born in the Philippines and grew up in Orange County, is the wife of Trent Reznor the NIN frontman and now a two-time Academy Award winner.
Maandig is a singer herself, fronting How to Destroy Angels, the post-industrial band she formed with Renzor, and at Coachella, she gave it her all.
Nine Inche Noize performed a 45-minute set on April 11 (US Time), and according to Rolling Stone, they played "beat-augmented remixes of" Nine Inch Nails hits including "Copy A," "Me, I'm Not," and "Closer."
"The latter was accompanied by the most striking choreography of the night, as a mass of humans encircled and swallowed Reznor at the end of the song, inviting him to join them in their amorphous horde," Rolling Stone said.
The group also performed "Parasite," a song by How to Destroy Angels.
A singer and actress, cool girl Maandig married Reznor in 2009, which whom she now has five kids, People magazine reports.
Meanwhile, a 2010 report by Women's Wear Daily (WWD) traced Maandig's career. "Known as Q to her friends," Maandig told WWD how she "really wanted to do Broadway" when she was young.
Then she got into a school musical and realized it was only a luke-warm dream. Continuing to sing in a school choir, she "got into ‘Miss Saigon,’ which sparked my interest in singing [professionally],” Maandig was quoted as saying.
In college, she majored in merchandise marketing at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise but dropped out after becoming "uninspired," WWD continued.
Maandig soon joined the LA band West Indian Girl. She met Reznor shortly after and the rest is history.
On IMDB, Maandig has been credited in a number of Hollywood projects including as a member of the music department of 2024's "Challengers" and 2011's "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" as well in the soundtrack of "Limitless."
She appeared in a 2017 episode of "Twin Peaks" and on her Instagram page, Maandig dedicated a post about it. "One day, I will be able to tell our daughter that when she was marinating in my belly, she got to be in an episode of twin peaks," Maandig captioned her 2017 post.
Among her pinned posts on Instagram was from June 2022, when she sang on the soundtrack of a Fendi men's show.
"Very honored to have been invited by Alessandro Cortini to sing on his soundtrack for the stunning Fendi mens SS23 show," Maandig wrote as she expressed her gratitude to Cortini and Fendi, among others. "It was a pleasure," she said.
