'Dreamboi' to make international premiere at LGBT+ film festival in San Francisco

"Dreamboi" is heading to San Francisco, California!

On Instagram, "Dreamboi" director Rodina Singh announced that the film is set to make its international premiere at the 50th edition of Frameline in San Francisco, scheduled from June 17 to 27.

"[Frameline Festival] is one of the oldest and most important LGBTQ+ film festivals in the world, a home for queer cinema for nearly 50 years," Rodina wrote.

"And this year, somehow, our strange, intimate, trans Filipino fever dream gets to be part of it," she added.

The trans filmmaker then reflected on the milestone of the film and what it means to her.

"As a transpinay filmmaker, I grew up seeing trans people onscreen mostly as jokes, warnings, side characters, or tragedies," she said.

"So much of my work has been trying to imagine us differently — as people capable of desire, fantasy, sexuality, softness, grief, beauty, absurdity, humor, and love," she added.

Rodina also recalled how "Dreamboi" survived censorship and doubt.

In October, the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board rated the film R-18 on its third appeal after it had previously received an X rating twice.

"And now Dreamboi gets to bring that trans imagination to Frameline's historic 50th year," Rodina said.

"Thank you to everyone who stayed with me and this film through all its strange and difficult stages of becoming," she added.

Rodina also dedicated the film "to every Filipino queer and trans artist who was made to feel 'too much,' 'too loud,' 'too political,' 'too sexual,' or 'too strange' to ever belong in cinema."

Described as an erotic thriller exploring trans desire, "Dreamboi" stars Tony Labrusca, EJ Jallorina, and Migs Almendras.
