After a much-hyped teaser video made the rounds in social networks earlier this month, Lasallians old and new braved the bipolar weather and trekked to the Taft campus for De La Salle University’s annual University Week.

Br. Bernie Oca, FCS, Lasallian brother and Vice Chancellor for Lasallian Mission and Alumni Relations, told GMA News Online that this year’s University Week is “bigger, better, and has more involvement, because it is the Centennial Year.”

The University Week ended on Feb. 17 at “The Big 100,” a culminating night that may or may not have been bigger or better, but had all the usual attractions that Lasallians love.

The school spirit was undeniable as students, alumni, and guests transformed the relatively small Taft campus into a sea of green and white.

True to the University’s reputation as a business school, the campus played host to the usual bazaar where students were able to sell their wares, including t-shirts (9Gag meme shirts were especially in-demand, almost eclipsing the ever-favored Animo shirts), handmade and upcycled jewelry, bags, shoes, and laptop cases.

As usual, the Haunted Hall, a horror house set up by the university’s resident theater guild, attracted the same large crowd that it does every year. A few steps away from the Haunted Hall was the jousting arena which also drew quite a crowd as students put their gladiator gameface on and battled it out on the inflatable arena in the name of lighthearted fun.

At the Yuchengco lobby, the old-school and modern came together as Xbox and Playstation booths were set up alongside the more traditional fair attractions like the face-painting station, jail booth and marriage booth. All of them were equally popular among the students.

There was also of course, the program and concert, which is a staple in Lasallian campus events. The show was hosted by “May Tamang Balita” host Ramon Bautista and Magic 89.9 DJs Slick Rick and Sam YG.

Aside from the neverending wisecracks from the hilarious hosts, the program also included games, a fashion show (a time-honored Lasallian tradition), and performances from students, including the university’s dance company.

The highlight of the program was "Animovement," the concert which featured local bands like the Techy Romantics, Up Dharma Down, Radioactive Sago Project, Franco and Taken by Cars.

Of course, the night would not have been complete without the usual fireworks display and yes, a time-stopping, rousing chorus of the Alma Mater song. The raised arms and the chorus of voices singing the all-too familiar lines only showed that despite the University Week's lack of novelty, it was actually the same old things that made it all the more special. — TJD, GMA News
