"Each has a story to tell... They matter; and they will be missed if they stopped doing what they are doing now," said Joanne Rae Ramirez, People Asia editor-in-chief in the Editor's Note for the said issue.

"Severino uses his stories as a 'witness and a weapon' for change," she said.

"It's a challenge to the awardees to live up to the billing, not only to be men who matter but to produce work that matters, and to do things that matter to the public and the country," Severino said after the ceremony.

Severino has been a journalist since 1988. He started his journalism career as a newspaper reporter at the Manila Chronicle, and is a co-founder of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism.

He shifted to television via The Probe Team in 1997, and joined I-Witness on GMA Network in 2002. He is marking his tenth year with the documentary show, one of the most awarded programs on Philippine television, in 2012.  Severino is currently a co-anchor on GMA News TV's "News to Go," editor-in-chief of GMA News Online, and vice president for multimedia journalism of GMA Network, Inc. –KG, GMA News
