Movie poster artist's granddaughter thanks Dolphy with painting

Rodolfo "Dolphy" Quizon is missed by Filipinos all over the world, from his immediate family to those who never met the man, but perhaps felt as if they knew him through his hundreds of films.

 

For Monie Domer, Dolphy's death has brought tremendous sadness. Domer says she may have never existed if not for the Comedy King. 

"Without Dolphy, malamang wala rin ako," says Domer, whose grandfather Eddie Domer was the man behind so many of his movie poster ads.

 

"Hundreds yata ng posters ay ni-layout niya nang mano-mano," shares Domer. 

 

Many of the posters that her grandfather made were for movies featuring Dolphy, such as Luciano B. Carlos' "John en Marsha Ngayong '91" (RVQ Productions), Ben Feleo's "Always in My Heart" (Rodessa Films Int'l), F.H. Constantino's "Alyas Don Juan: Agent 1-2-3" (JRS Productions), Jett Espiritu's "Balbakwa: The Invisible Man" (Solar Films Inc.) and Dolphy's own "Father en Son" (RVQ Productions).

 

"Siya 'yung reason kung bakit nabuhay ng lolo ko ang pamilya nila, at napakain at napag-aral ang aking ama, kaya para sa akin, hindi ako nabuhay sa mundo kung hindi din dahil sa mga movie ads ni Dolphy na pinagawa kay lolo," says Domer, whose grandfather passed away five years ago.

 

To pay tribute to Dolphy, Domer took inspiration from her lolo and created a painting she called "Happy King."

 

"'Pag sinabing Dolphy, isa na ako sa milyong-milyong Pilipinong ngingiti. Marinig lang ang pangalan nya’y sadyang kumikilos mag-isa ang aking mga labi. 'Di matatawaran pa ng kahit anung mabentang pick-up line, o malupit na timingat joke kapag si Pidol na ang humirit at magbitiw ng linyang makulit," Domer wrote of her artwork. 

 

Domer painted "Happy King" on Wednesday, July 11, while tearfully watching the news of Dolphy's passing. 

 

"Malungkot pero masaya—sa pagkakataong maipinta ang mukha ng Hari ng Komedya," she wrote in her post on Facebook.   

While Domer regrets not having been able to meet Dolphy and thank him in person, she is content to be able to show her appreciation and gratitude through her artwork, which is on display at the Backdoor Ventures Arts and Music Festival at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

 

"Buong buhay ko lumaki ako na nangagarap na one day I'll be able to see the Comedy King nang harap-harapan, at makapagpasalamat sa impact na idinulot niya sa buong pamilya... Mag-tha-thank you lang sana ako sa lahat ng ginawa niya way way back pa," says Domer. 

 

Domer shares that since her grandfather died, Dolphy became an extension of her lolo to her family. 

 

"Lalo akong magpupursige sa art ko, ‘di lang para sa lolo ko, kung 'di para sa taong nagturo sa ‘king ngumiti at nagbigay ng kulay, inspirasyon at pag-asa sa buong pamilya ko," she says. –KG, GMA News
