You always look so cool: The fashions of 'The Great Gatsby'
By CHINA JOCSON
The much-anticipated film version of "The Great Gatsby" has finally arrived, as interpreted by director Baz Luhrmann, who is best known for movies like "Romeo + Juliet" and "Moulin Rouge", two films recognized not just by movie critics but also by fashion authorities for their visual richness.

"I like large parties. They're so intimate." Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) and Jordan Baker (Elizabeth Debicki) party the night away in "The Great Gatsby".
"The Great Gatsby" is no different. Set in New York City in a lull between two world-changing events—just after World War I and a few years before the Great Depression—it was the Roaring Twenties. The Jazz Age. The Age of Wonderful Nonsense.
The film successfully conveys the vibrance of this decade, thanks largely to the work of Academy Award-winning costume designer Catherine Martin and legendary fashion designer Miuccia Prada.

Another kind of fast and furious: Nick and Jordan go for a ride.
Feathered headpieces, long string of beads, silk camisoles—these 1920s staples are in abundance throughout the film, but what would fashion in that period be without the flapper dress? In the movie, this popular dress has been interpreted in various ways not only to entice the audience but also to depict the socio-economic differences of the women during that time.
The rich and beautiful Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan) wears elegant flapper dresses in palettes of pastels and nudes, adorned with elaborate beadwork atop fabrics like silk and lace.

Hothouse flowers and delicate lace define the spoiled life of Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan).
On the other hand Myrtle (Isla Fisher), a mechanic's wife and a rich man's mistress, wears loud, imposing colors such as red partnered with over-the-top makeup and vulgar accessories.
The gentlemen’s costumes also defined their status. The old-moneyed Tom Buchanan types wore fitted, dark, double breasted vests with suits and coats, they were stiff and conservative.
Millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is not quite part of that circle despite all the lavish parties he throws, wears a striped pink linen suit in one scene. He is, after all, a mysterious figure, and the suit rather sums that up.

Hairstyles and headpieces were not to be missed. The bob cut is perhaps the defining hairstyle of the 1920's, and it was more than a fashion statement, it was also a show of women’s independence. Previous decades expected women to grow their hair long, the 1920s cut their hair along with that social mandate.
In "The Great Gatsby," the bob takes center stage, though often topped with feathered headpieces, bejeweled hairpins and ornate hats.

Feathers, furs, pearls and a chic bob: Daisy is accompanied by Nick, Gatsby and her husband Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton).
The movie has garnered mixed reviews from critics. Some have even argued that the costumes are historically inaccurate. But being set in the Age of Intolerance, and Gatsby himself being an inconsistent character, the audience will surely be forgiving with these supposed costume missteps.
The costumes favorably contribute in making the viewer feel the opulence of the era. And perhaps even inspire the return of these 1920s fashions in the coming days—right, old sport? — BM, GMA News
