Two GMA pillars will be recognized by the School Press Advisers Movement Inc. (SPAM) with their first awards of excellence for media practitioners.

GMA News anchor and “Imbestigador ng Bayan” Mike Enriquez will receive the Award of Excellence in the Field of Broadcasting, while GMA News Online Editor-in-Chief Howie Severino will receive the Award of Excellence in the Field of Documentary Reportage.

SPAM President Melanie Briones explained that student journalists will be recognized as well at the group's annual convention in Bohol September 12-14.

"To recognize the efforts, dedication and achievement of campus journalist, advisers and mainstream media practitioners, we are launching the SPAM’s Medallion Awards of Excellence in the Field of Campus Journalism in the Philippines and the Award of Excellence for Media Practitioners," Briones said.

According to Briones, Severino was chosen for his excellent and socially relevant documentaries.

"I'm deeply honored to be given this award, but also realize the great responsibility to be seen as a model for young documentary makers," Severino remarked.

"The advances in technology enable many now to aspire to make documentaries. The flip side of this new power is the need to be fair, honest, and humble in the use of technology," he said.

Mike Enriquez
Enriquez said "awards from the academe that recognize excellence in broadcasting are always a challenge and a source of extra inspiration."

"It makes broadcast practitioners continue to strive to continuously improve their craft and their service to their audiences and to the country as a whole. We are also moved to continue striving to make ourselves worthy role models for everyone in the academe, especially the broadcasters of tomorrow – the students," he said.

The awards will be given at the 7th Annual National SPAM Convention in Tagbilaran City, Bohol on September 12 to 14, 2013.

With the theme “Intensifying the power of Campus Paper in Protecting and Preserving the Environment and Natural Resources,” the convention aims to recognize the excellent services of campus journalists and advisers, hone their talents, and provide them with the recent trends in campus journalism.
