Going simple and fresh for 2014: Hair and makeup trends

Simple and fresh is in this 2014, whether it's hairstyles or makeup. According to celebrity makeup artist Paolo Maranan, simple is edgier and sexier. Just remember that the only facial features to accentuate are the eyes and the lips.

“Another trend is actually, 'yun nga, Kohl eyeliner,” said Maranan in a 24 Oras video Thursday. “Two sweeps of inner liner na Kohl eyeliner, up and down or diyan sa baba lang. Then let it smudge. So it doesn't look that clean, but it's edgy, it's sexier.”

Gloss? Shimmer? Glitter? Those are so last season.

Blush-on, meanwhile, is “not a highlight this year, more of the eyes and the lips lang,” added Maranan.

He advised that tri-colored correction creams are a better choice than beauty blemish creams for foundation. Heavy foundation is a no-no.

“If maputi ka, then walang problema,” Maranan said. “You can use BB cream and it blends well and it sets well. Pero kung medyo morena ka, sometimes nagmumukhang grayish.”

Moisturizer is key in achieving the fresh look, as the cornerstone of the fresh look is a flawless complexion.

Meanwhile, for your puckers, radiant orchid and plum are going to be all the rage later this year, but you must also choose colors that match your skin tone. Orange and bright coral look great on morenas while matte and red go best with tisays.

In general, in the way of colors, the bright, electric shades of the 80s funk look are your best friend. But pastels such as lavender, light pink, and light blue can still hold their own against the turning tides of style.

Hairstyles

For women, the short, papered, and textured styles of the 70s are poised to make a comeback, booting out the bob.

“We're gonna see a lot of shorter cuts from like, Pamela Anderson, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Hudson,” said Louis Phillip Kee, owner of the salon of the same name.

However, long hair will always be in style.

“Very simple ponytail, but it's lower,” said Maranan. “I see braids coming back—but this time, it's different. It's coiled around the head, so it looks like a crown.”

Faux-hawks, or fake mohawks, will be in for men.

But in spite of the changing styles, never forget to choose a cut that suits you and your personality best. - Vida Cruz/RAF, GMA News
