Writer Jessica Zafra in better condition, may leave hospital Tuesday

Author and columnist Jessica Zafra is now doing better and might be discharged from the hospital Tuesday morning, a member of the staff at Makati Medical Center (MMC) said.

“The family is just waiting for a clearance from her neurologist. Iniintay lang yung result ng kanyang EEG (electroencephalogram) test,” Janet Pelicano, clerk on duty at MMC's nurse station, told GMA News Online in a phone interview.

Pelicano said the EEG test result will be out Monday evening.

“If everything goes well with her EEG her neurologist may possibly issue a clearance within the day or tomorrow morning, after that, she is free to go,” Pelicano said.

Pelicano said Zafra's condition has gotten better since she was admitted to the MMC before dawn on May 27.

“She's responding well, nakakausap na siya ng maayos, nagrerespond siya sa mga questions ng attending physicians,” Pelicano said.

Pelicano however refused to elaborate on the medications, treatments and other exams done on Zafra citing patient confidentiality.

Zafra, a three-time Palanca awardee, is known for her book series “Twisted”. She was brought to MMC last week after suffering dehydration which resulted in an electrolyte imbalance and an inflammation in the brain.

She was found at the staircase of her apartment “conscious but disoriented” last Monday according to Facebook posts of some of her writer friends.

Her sister Cheryl “Cookie” De Jesus reported that as of May 28, Zafra had regained consciousness but that her memory was still "fuzzy". — JDS, GMA News
