Super Typhoon Yolanda battered Eastern Samar in November 2013, leaving thousands dead or missing and many homeless. One year and a month after, Typhoon Ruby hit the same area, which is still picking up the remnants of their lives.
But resident Lyn Torres remains hopeful even after surviving Yolanda and seeing her neighborhood destroyed by Ruby.
"Kahit mahirap, mahal pa rin kami ng Diyos. Wala po kaming casualty dito. May Pasko pa rin," she said in a report on GMA News TV's News To Go on Tuesday.
Still, the rest of the residents of barangay Mantang cries for help, "Boligi kami." ("Tulungan niyo kami.")
Barangay Captain Bhonian Feniza said that 90 percent of Mantang was totally damaged. Even an evacuation center in the barangay collapsed during the typhoon, leaving an old woman injured.
Ruby's effects
Many residents of barangay Mantang in Taft, Eastern Samar were spared from the wrath of Yolanda—but Ruby, which was very strong when it passed through the town, wrecked their homes.
Rescuers are even now struggling to reach coastal villages, as Ruby "folded homes like paper."
Some living in the area were not even able to get away with their lives. The Philippine Red Cross reported that 21 people died in Ruby's onslaught.

Ruby, which will exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Thursday, caused landslides and flash floods in Eastern Samar when it made landfall in Dolores on Saturday evening.
Private groups have begun organizing relief operations and collecting donations for the victims.
Meanwhile, Typhoon Ruby's violence across the archipelago has prompted Filipino activists in Lima, Peru to draft a global plan to limit such potentially life-threatening events with more urgency. The latest talk was under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
