Albay town holds walking parol contest

To showcase its commitment to indigenous and recyclable materials amid the Christmas season, Daraga town in Albay province held a "Walking Parol" contest on Tuesday.

Sixteen contestants donned giant Christmas lanterns, each measuring 1.5 by 1.5 meters and made of indigenous materials, GMA Bicol's Maila Aycocho reported Thursday.

While some lanterns featured in the contest were made of dried banana leaves, others were made of plastic cups.

"Ang pinapahalagaan namin, yung local made kasi pwede natin itong ipagmalaki, na pwede nating gamitin ito na i-showcase natin ang Daraga," councilor and tourism committee head Mark Magalona said.

Many who saw the designs were delighted, the report said.

"Magagayon... magagayo... talagang pinaghandaan talaga nila," said Ricky Mapagkalita. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
