A triathlete lawyer set a new record for crossing the 10-kilometer Hinatuan Passage in Surigao del Norte, in the name of environmental protection and a healthy lifestyle.
Lawyer Ingemar Macarine, 38, completed the swim in a little over five hours, according to a report on GMA's "Saksi" on Monday night.
Footage from GMA News stringer Natz Corbeta showed Macarine raising his hands in triumph after completing the feat.
Macarine started his non-stop swim at 6:30 a.m. at Bucas Grande island last Jan. 2, and reached Barangay Cagdianao in Claver town after five hours and eight minutes.
He is the first Filipino to swim the Hinatuan Passage non-stop.
The triathlete lawyer earned the nickname "Pinoy Aquaman" for his swims for the environment, as part of his advocacy for clean water and marine resources protection.
An earlier report on MindaNews said Claver plays host to mining companies that reportedly extract mineral ore, mostly nickel, and send them to China and Japan.
In May 2014, Macarine tried to swim from Visayas to Mindanao to raise awareness on the protection of the environment, but did not quite achieve his goal. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
