They don't call Pope Francis the "Rock star Pope" for nothing.

From gracing the cover of Rolling Stone magazine to posing with the youth for a selfie, the Roman Catholics' Pontiff has been seen to exhibit coolness, spontaneity, and a certain knack for breaking Church and security protocol.

During Pope Francis five-day apostolic visit to the Philippines. Filipinos experienced these lovable traits first hand as he made several surprise visits and occasionally made candid remarks, much to the delight of the eager faithful.

Pope Francis reads from a missal during the penitential rite of his first Mass in the Philippines at the Manila Cathedral on Friday, January 16.

1. The pope literally caught his security off guard when he went out the side door of the Manila Cathedral instead of the main entrance where members of the clergy and a throng of the faithful were waiting for him after a mass he celebrated there.

These children from Tulay ng Kabataan spent a few minutes with the pope on Friday, Jan. 16.

2. Instead of going straight back to the Apostolic Nunciature from the cathedral, Pope Francis made a detour and paid some 300 street children at the Tulay ng Kabataan (TNK) Foundation, a Church-run charity in Intramuros, a surprise visit.

3. On Friday, his second night in Manila, Pope Francis held an unscheduled meeting with 40 Filipino Jesuits at the Apostolic Nunciature. Francis is the first pope from the Society of Jesus.

Rain greeted the pope when he arrived in Tacloban City to console the survivors of super typhoon Yolanda.

4. Ditching his prepared English speech in his desire to speak from the heart, Pope Francis delivered an impromptu speech in his native Spanish with the help of a translator during the mass he officiated at the Tacloban airport in Leyte.

Pope Francis waves to the crowd in Tacloban City on Saturday, Jan. 17, after celebrating mass at the airport there.

5. Right after celebrating mass and while others were still receiving Holy Communion, Pope Francis surprised pilgrims gathered at the Tacloban airport when he went around the site in the Popemobile, even stopping to bless a child in the crowd.

Pope Francis waves to the crowd while on board a Volkswagen SUV on his way to Malacañang for a courtesy call on President Benigno Aquino III on Friday, Jan. 16.

6. Pope Francis rode to Malacañang Palace in a closed Volkswagen SUV on Friday morning but that did not stop him from literally reaching out to the masses as he rolled down his window to wave to the crowd lining the route.

7. Basically, every candid albeit funny remark by the pope was, well, a break from protocol. That includes the pontiff blurting out "Thank you very much" after the clergy responded with a resounding "Yes" to a biblical question ("Do you love me?") he was reading out during mass at the Manila Cathedral.

At the Palo Cathedral in Leyte, a smiling Pope Francis requested the cheering crowd to not only pray for him but to also "be quiet." And yes, there was that "McDo" sign the pontiff did during a motorcade in Leyte.
