PHL Post issues commemorative stamps for National Artist Avellana

The Philippine Postal Corp. will issue this month a new set of stamps marking the birth centenary of National Artist for Theater and Film Lamberto Avellana.

In a news release, PHLPost said the stamps marking Avellana's birthdate on Feb. 12, 1915 are also meant to celebrate National Arts Month in February.

"Avellana was the first to use the motion picture camera to establish a point-of-view, a move that revolutionized the techniques of film narration. In his first film Sakay, Avellana demonstrated a kind of visual rhythm that established a new filmic language," it said.

It also noted National Arts Month aims to promote the local culture and arts scene through a festive showcase of Filipino talents in the regions.

The commemorative stamp will have a denomination of P10, and about 65,000 were printed by Amstar Co. Inc.

Its design was coordinated by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines.

Postmaster General Josefina dela Cruz said PHLPost "pays tribute to Avellana and his contribution to the preservation and promotion of the arts in our country and to the world."

The stamps are now available at the Post Shop, Philately and Museum Division of the Manila Central Post Office. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
