It may not quite be turning garbage into gold, but it's quite close in the case of this furniture maker in Pangasinan province.

Ben Fernandez makes furniture out of discarded wood, GMA Dagupan's Jette Arcellana reported on "Primera Balita."

Fernandez said he noticed many pieces of wood as well as items made of wood going to waste, and decided to recycle them into new pieces of furniture.

His business in Barangay Caoayan in Sual has been thriving for five years.

"Mas matibay ito kasi ang kahoy na ginagamit dito [good] quality ang kahoy," worker Michael Tabora said.

Among the items Fernandez's shop has produced are lampshades from old posts for P250, and a chair from wood that washed up from the sea for P250.

Fernandez even fashioned a sala set out of an antique sewing machine table for P2,500. — Joel Locsin/BM, GMA News
